Sustainability & Community

Sustainability, People & Purpose

At De Silva, sustainability is not a statement we make — it is a way we live. From the food we grow and the lagoon we protect, to the women we empower and the community we support, every action is part of our responsibility to Kalpitiya.

Sustainability & Eco Practices

Growing with the Land, Protecting the Lagoon

Our approach to sustainability begins with the place we call home. We believe a resort should take less, give more, and create a meaningful connection between guests, nature, and the local community.

Garden to Plate

Fresh Food from Our Own Soil

We grow our own vegetables and fruits in our garden and bring them directly to the guest table. This garden-to-plate approach allows us to serve fresh, seasonal, and honest food while reducing unnecessary transport and waste. This year, our target is to grow up to 80% of the vegetables and fruits we use in our own garden.

Supporting Local Suppliers

Rooted in the Local Economy

We work closely with local fishermen, farmers, and small suppliers around Kalpitiya. Fresh seafood comes directly from local fishermen, while vegetables, fruits, and daily ingredients are sourced from nearby communities whenever possible. This keeps our food fresh and supports the families around us.

No Plastic Bottles

Reusable by Design

We do not use plastic water bottles at the resort. Instead, we serve water and drinks in reusable glass bottles, including our own De Silva branded glass water bottles. It is a simple choice, but one that helps reduce plastic waste and protect the natural environment around the lagoon.

Mangrove Planting

Protecting the Lagoon Ecosystem

Almost every year, we organize mangrove planting programs to protect the lagoon, strengthen biodiversity, and support the natural coastal ecosystem. Mangroves are essential for the health of Kalpitiya’s lagoon environment, and we are proud to be part of protecting them for the future.

Taking Responsibility in Action

We regularly take part in beach cleanups and environmental cleaning projects. These actions remind us that sustainability is not only about policies, but about showing up, taking responsibility, and caring for the place that gives so much to us.

Empowering Women

Creating Space for Women to Grow

In many parts of village life in Sri Lanka, women are still expected to stay close to home. But with the rising cost of living and the challenges many families face, every family needs more support, opportunity, and independence.

At De Silva, we believe women should have the same opportunities to work, grow, and build their future. We are working towards a balanced team where men and women are given equal chances, and we aim to keep our hiring as close as possible to 50% women and 50% men.

Hospitality becomes more beautiful when women are part of it. Their warmth, natural care, smiles, attention to detail, and quiet strength bring something special to the guest experience. We encourage local women to believe in their talents, follow their dreams, and build careers with confidence.

“When women grow, families grow. When families grow, communities grow.”

Equal Opportunity

We actively create balanced hiring and fair roles so women and men can contribute equally across the resort.

Career Growth

Training, mentoring, and real responsibility help women build confidence, leadership, and long-term careers.

Local Women, Local Strength

By supporting women from nearby communities, we strengthen families and preserve local culture with dignity.

Community & Charity

Sharing What We Receive

Every year, after each season, we believe in sharing what we have received with the community around us. De Silva has always grown together with Kalpitiya, and giving back is part of who we are.

We support local students with educational needs by donating books, school bags, and learning materials. These small gifts can make a meaningful difference for children and families, especially in rural communities where access to school supplies is not always easy.

Our support does not stop in Kalpitiya. Whenever Sri Lanka faces natural disasters or difficult moments, we do not hesitate to step forward and help wherever we can. Whether it is providing essential items, supporting affected families, or joining relief efforts, we believe kindness should move beyond borders.

A Resort with Responsibility

For us, sustainability is not only about the environment. It is about people, food, water, community, women, children, and the future of the place we call home. Every guest who stays with us becomes part of this story.
