The Spot
Kalpitiya sits on Sri Lanka’s northwestern peninsula and has become one of Asia’s most reliable wind sports destinations. The shallow lagoon gives beginners an easy place to learn and progress, while open water beyond the sandbank brings extra speed, swell, and variety for confident riders.
In one destination you can switch between kitesurfing, wing foiling, and windsurfing depending on daily conditions. Warm water, tropical light, and a relaxed local rhythm make Kalpitiya both performance-driven and easy to enjoy off the water.
How to get to Kalpitiya? Stay at De Silva Resorts, ride directly with the school, and keep your sessions and logistics in one base with quick access to daily spots.
RIDE WITH USWhere To Ride
Kalpitiya Lagoon is the main everyday riding area and the easiest access point to the core De Silva experience. It offers wide open space, flat to lightly choppy water depending on where you ride, and practical conditions for daily sessions.
It is ideal for beginner lessons, progression, freeride laps, and confident mileage sessions. The shallow zones and broad launch areas make it safe and efficient for coaching and independent riding throughout both seasons.
Launching and landing is easiest and safest with support from the station and crew, especially on busier days and during stronger summer wind.
Where To Ride
Donkey Point is one of the nearby ocean-side wave spots and a strong option for riders looking beyond flat-water sessions. It works well for wave-oriented kitesurfing and wing foiling when the swell lines up.
Conditions are better suited to intermediate and advanced riders, with a freer, less crowded feel than many more developed spots. On good days, it is close enough to combine with lagoon sessions in one trip.
RIDE WITH US
Mid-May to mid-October is the main windy season in Kalpitiya. Wind is typically cross-shore, reliable, and stronger, with most days in the 18-25 knot range and stronger periods reaching around 30 knots.
This is the best window for full-power riding, faster progression, freeride mileage, jumping, and long days on the water. It is the strongest and most consistent season of the year.
Mid-December to mid-March brings a lighter but still reliable wind rhythm, usually around 15-25 knots. Sessions feel more relaxed while still offering strong time on the water.
Winter is excellent for progression, freeride flow, and wing foiling, with room to combine riding days with exploration, wellness, and local wildlife trips.
